the facts

A battered person is not necessarily bruised or bleeding. Sometimes a person does not realize they have been battered.

A woman is beaten every nine seconds.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women; causing more injuries than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined.

In the U.S., almost four million women are beaten by male partners every year. More than three million children witness acts of domestic violence each year.

Alcohol and other drugs do not cause battering behaviors. Yes, they may be a factor, but not a cause, only an excuse.

Every month, more than 50,000 women seek restraining or protective orders.

Sexual Assault includes a wide range of victimizations, separate from rape or attempted rape. These crimes include attacks or attempted attacks generally involving unwanted sexual contact between victim and offender. Sexual assault may not include force. It may include such things as grabbing, fondling or verbal threats.
